ESTA Changes for Brits Travelling to the USA

The US Customs and Border Protection agency have made changes the way they process their ESTA applications which means they will no longer be approved on the same day as the application is made. The average time for approval is now 72 hours and so people are advised to apply for their ESTA at least a week before it is needed.

The ESTA is a document that replaced the Green Card in 2007. It costs $14 and will be valid for two years. You will not be able to board a flight to the United States if you do not have an ESTA so it is vital that you have it in place before you travel. You will also need an ESTA if you are travelling through the US to another destination. It is required for residents of all countries that are part of the Visa Waiver Program which the UK is. You are able to stay in the US for a period of 90 days at a time for business or leisure when you have a valid ESTA.

Although an ESTA will ensure that you are able to board a plane to the US, it does not guarantee entry. The final decision on this matter will be made by the Customs and Border Protection agency when you go through customs when you have arrived in the United States.
